Well this weekend was another busy one...with the clock winding down it's crunch time. This weekend I headed up 3 hours north to Durango, Colorado. It was my first time ever in Colorado and it was so fun! I met up with Mary (former star of Lucky in Kentucky blog) and we did what was only fitting...drink. Not to make us sound like alcoholics but the last time we were together was on the Bourbon trail so this time we did some wine/beer tasting! We started off early Saturday morning with Wine Tasting in Downtown Durango (walking distance from the hotel!) and a light lunch.
We checked out some shops in Downtown before heading off to a hot springs. Now looking back we probably should have made the longer hour drive to Pagosa Springs which had 23 pools but we settled for Trimble Springs, just a 10 minute drive. We soaked in the pool on and off for about 2 hours and made a quick stop to the dry Sauna (we only lasted 5 minutes) before heading back for dinner.
Dinner led to some more drinking, the bar we went to had 100 beers on tap! We also got an out of this world Cheddar Beer/Spicy Black Bean soup called a Black & Tan. Gotta search for that recipe on Pinterest.
Sunday morning brought us to Durango Coffee Company for a lovely German Chocolate Latte, breakfast burrito and famous "buttermilk stick". We read about it online and decided to split on, it was heavenly! So to work off this buttermilk stick we drove a few miles out of town towards the San Juan National Forest and hiked the Goulding Trail.
The entire way up we had the trail completely to ourselves. On the way down we nearly were trampled by a pack of 12 horses that had just brought a group of Elk hunters up the mountain, I'm still trying to figure out how those horses managed the narrow trail.
After being anatomy nerds for most of the way up the mountain, our nerdiness continued when we stumbled upon a few scattered animal bones, what we know were vertebrae and a sacrum, skull, and what might have been a femur. The top of the trail led us to a large meadow that is famous for Elk, we didn't see any and I'm not sure how I would have reacted if we did!
The hike was pretty brutal...considering how sore both of us were today. The weekend was a blast and I'm so glad we got to meet up! Annual or bi-annual outdoor/drinking adventures are in the works....Just goes to show ya that great friends don't need to talk or even see each other every day and can just pick up where they left off.
The weekend ended with a beautiful drive back to Gallup through the Rez.... and yes I did pull over for these pics :)
